Sam Humphries Takes on Marvel’s The Ultimates, and More. MUCH More. – TFAW

Sam Humphries Takes on Marvel’s The Ultimates, and More. MUCH More. TFAWRegular readers of The Blog From Another World know that we’ve had a long and interesting relationship with the mega-talented Sam Humphries, one of the folks behind MySpace Dark Horse Presents and writer of indy comics like Our Love Is Real and Sacrifice.

Well, his extreme work ethic and knack for promotion has paid off in a big way: not only is he writing the John Carter: Gods of Mars comic book series for Marvel and two more series, Higher Earth and Fanboys vs. Zombies, for BOOM! Studios, but he was announced as Jonathan Hickman’s new co-writer on Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates, starting with issue #10.

Whew! Did we mention we’re entering convention season, with WonderCon and Emerald City Comicon right around the corner? With all that on his plate, we feel very lucky that Sam had the chance to chat with us about his plans for The Ultimates, what intrigues him about the alternate-Earths premise of Higher Earth, and what comes next (sleep?). Read on!

.com: First off, congratulations! With all of the comic-book series on your plate, I guess my first question has to be, have you made a clone of yourself? When will you share your knowledge with the world?

Sam Humphries: I haven’t made a clone of myself, I just started moving twice as fast as normal. The side effects have been Cosby-releated hallucinations, rapid hair growth, and reverse aging; I am on some Benjamin Button shit right now.

Sam Humphries Takes on Marvel’s The Ultimates, and More. MUCH More. TFAWTFAW.com: It was announced that you’ll be co-writing Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates with Jonathan Hickman. How exactly will that work?

SH: We will be co-writing the book starting with issue #10, shipping in May. Hickman always has a long plan for the book, but he’s given us license to step back and take a new path. You’ll see elements of both Hickman and Humphries in our issues.

TFAW.com: Did you have a relationship with Hickman prior to this? Have you worked together before?

SH: We have never worked together before, unless the kids these days consider a lost summer in Prague “work.”

TFAW.com: What’s your theme, or your main idea, for the book?

SH: My theme is “Watch the Throne.” This is the Marvel Universe equivalent of Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Drake together at Coachella. These are the biggest characters set loose on a wide screen stage where anything can happen. Who gon’ stop them??

TFAW.com: From the cover art, the book is clearly meant to appeal to fans of the movies, but the characters themselves can be pretty different than the “standard” versions. How do you reconcile that?

SH: I just try to get away with as much as I can that you can’t do in the movies or the regular Marvel Universe books. I’m trying to do things with these characters you won’t see anywhere else. Shake them up in ways you’ve never seen before, and through that, get to know them in ways you never have before.

Sam Humphries Takes on Marvel’s The Ultimates, and More. MUCH More. TFAWTFAW.com: I’m personally fascinated by Jamie Braddock as Captain Britain. Do you have any plans for him?

SH: Jamie is definitely in the mix, we have a six-issue origin story about his misspent youth as a Britpop fan. (Dear everyone, I’m kidding. Love, Sam.)

TFAW.com: Are there any other characters you’re especially eager to play with?

SH: Aside from the big names, I’m really looking forward to writing Monica Chang, the Black Widow.

TFAW.com: Can you introduce Higher Earth to us?

SH: Higher Earth is a sci-fi revenge story set in an empire that has conquered over a hundred earths across alternate timelines. We follow Rex, a ronin of sorts, and Heidi, a girl born in garbage, as they slash a bloody path through the empire.

TFAW.com: In some respects, it’s akin to the Ultimates because it deals with alternate Earths. What fascinates you about that concept?

SH: Well, the Ultimates don’t know they’re an alternate earth. In Higher Earth, going from one timeline to the next is as natural as taking a flight from New York to London. It’s a massive cognitive leap that is now a day-to-day reality for a civilization of a thousand billion citizens.

TFAW.com: What does the tagline, “You Are Illegal on This Earth,” refer to?

SH: Higher Earth is an empire that rules a network of connected earths. They heavily regulate passage between timelines, and who is or is or not “legal” on any earth can shift rapidly.

Sam Humphries Takes on Marvel’s The Ultimates, and More. MUCH More. TFAWTFAW.com: You’ve been really strategic about your career and promoting your books. Is that a happy accident, or did you sit down and write out a business plan?

SH: I have certainly been strategic in my career–I’ve planned things out in a considered way, managed my resources, and tried to make the most out of every single opportunity presented to me. But you can’t plan everything. Sometimes the most you can do is be bold, be prepared to take advantage of the unexpected, and work your ass off.

TFAW.com: What books are you enjoying right now, as a reader?

SH: My favorite book right now is Is That All There Is? by Joost Swarte. I’ve been waiting almost 20 years for a book of his work in English, ever since I saw him for the first time in RAW Magazine in the ’90s. This book does not disappoint!

TFAW.com: What’s next for you? Do you have time for anything else?

SH: NO ELISABETH! Nothing else! No new books, no new announcements, NOTHING! Ya can’t make me Elisabeth!! I guess the next things will be WonderCon, Emerald City, a thousand scripts, and then death.

Our thanks again to Sam for taking a break from writing his many scripts and giving us the inside scoop. You can pre-order Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates #10 and #11, Higher Earth #1, and Fanboys vs. Zombies #1 and #2 now and save 20% off the cover price!

February Product Review Contest – TFAW

February Product Review Contest TFAWAs part of our monthly Product Review Contest, we’ve picked three reviews and are awarding $25 gift certificates to the people who posted them.

Peter from Stockholm is the first of this month’s winners. He wrote several really great reviews this month, one of which was his three-star review for Y The Last Man Deluxe Edition HC Vol. 5, and gives it a strong recommendation for comics fans and gamers alike:

Sadly, the last volume is also the least fulfilling with a weak ending to an otherwise great story.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the volume, but these types of reviews can be really helpful to people.

February Product Review Contest TFAWIrene from California let fellow Mass Effect fans know what they’re getting into when they order the Art of the Mass Effect Universe HC:

This is a very beautiful book and I would recommend it to hardcore Mass Effect fans who love collect. It’s very high quality, the cover, the pages, the artwork printed inside. There are various sketches showing the different stages of the characters/weapons/etc which artists will find very interesting. If you’ve seen character lithographs from the BioWare store some of them are reprinted into the book. If you are trying to avoid any spoilers stay away from from the Mass Effect 3 section in the back.

February Product Review Contest TFAWFinally, Sean from Ohio dropped by for a couple reviews, one of which was for the Captain America Road to Reborn N&D TPB. Here’s what he had to say:

The best thing about Ed Brubaker writing Captain America is his absolute love for the character, history, and mythos. Brubaker somehow killed Steve Rogers, replaced him with the impossible, and is still able to make unbelievable stories month in and month out. Here we get to read an amazing look at how so many different individuals are one year after Cap’s assassination. Add to that some fantastic looks back into Bucky’s past. The art was almost an A+ across the board with only a few missteps. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and agree that Brubaker is one of comics’ finest writers.

We want to thank everyone again for sharing their product reviews last month. You guys really do a lot to help other customers each time you submit a review. Thanks for your efforts! You don’t have to like the product to snag a winning review, so feel free to rant or gush.

So submit your reviews and help your fellow collectors, and us, sort out the “HOT” from the “NOT”! Who knows, you may be one of next month’s winners.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PRODUCT REVIEW:

Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons Team up for New Series: Secret Service – TFAW

Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons Team up for New Series: Secret Service TFAW The Secret Service is the latest brainchild of Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Wanted), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, (Martha Washington), and Matthew Vaughan (director of Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class). The first issue hits in April, and you could say that the creative team has definitely piqued our interest.

Millar has wanted to work with Gibbons for decades, and he says that he finally has the story that is worthy of Gibbons’ extraordinary talent. The Secret Service chronicles the education of a 21st Century super-spy, and yet it is so much more than a just another spy story. Action abounds as we follow the book’s heroes around the world as they try to save the world on their mission to keep terrorists at bay.

Scott Snyder Ramps up DC’s New 52 Batman Series – TFAW

Scott Snyder Ramps up DC’s New 52 Batman Series TFAW

Scott Snyder (American Vampire) and Greg Capullo (Action Comics, Haunt) are absolutely crushing the new Batman series right now. It’s not some trivial throw-away story–it is deeply engrossing and feels important. The story gives us a lot of insight into the character of Bruce Wayne, and #6 was amazing! (Check out our review here)

We’re excited to see where Snyder takes this series. If the description for Batman #8 is any indication, he’s just getting started.

Broken and beaten, Bruce Wayne has retreated from Gotham City to Wayne Manor. But no place is safe, because the Court of Owls is about to strike at the heart of city, and nothing will ever be the same. Be there for the start of the battle for Gotham City’s soul, and the prelude to “The Night of the Owls.”

There are a bunch of other great books in DC’s New 52 relaunch. Make sure you stay tuned to the TFAW Newsletter and check out our weekly comic book review videos to see which ones are making the grade.

Brian K. Vaughan Returns to Comics With New Saga Series – TFAW

Brian K. Vaughan Returns to Comics With New Saga Series TFAW

After a brief stint away from comics, Brian K. Vaughan (Ex Machina, Y: The Last Man) returns for a new creator-owned series at Image Comics called Saga. Vaughan is teaming up with Fiona Staples, an amazingly talented artist whose work has graced the covers of books like Dollhouse, Thunder Agents, and more over the past few years. Her art is clean, expressive, and downright beautiful, so we’re excited to see what she brings to the series.

Saga is an original sci-fi/fantasy epic for mature readers. The book follows new parents Marko and Alana as they risk everything to raise their child amidst a never-ending galactic war. Think -esque action with the drama of Game of Thrones and you’re in the right ballpark.

The adventure begins in a spectacular double-sized first issue–with 44 pages of story–on March 14! New series can be a gamble sometimes, but this time the stars aligned, and we’re really looking forward to the pleasure of an all-new series penned by Vaughan. We’re on board, how about you?

Bill Willingham’s Fables Spinoff Fairest Begins in March – TFAW

Bill Willingham’s Fables Spinoff Fairest Begins in March TFAWThis March, New York Times best-selling, award-winning creator Bill Willingham presents Fairest, a new series starring the female characters from his Fables series. Balancing horror, humor and adventure, Fairest explores the secret histories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina, Snow White, Rose Red, and many more.

January Product Review Contest – TFAW

January Product Review Contest TFAWAs part of our monthly Product Review Contest, we’ve picked three reviews and are awarding $25 gift certificates to the people who posted them.

Daniel from Australia is the first of this month’s winners. He really dug the Batman Arkham City HC, and gives it a strong recommendation for comics fans and gamers alike:

Got this in the post right after I clocked the game. A must read if you love the game, but it’s brilliant enough to be a stand alone, the art is 5 stars, story is great. Get it.

January Product Review Contest TFAWA fellow Aussie, Louise, had a ringing endorsement of the Escape From Wonderland TPB as well as several reviews for New 52 issues. Here’s what she had to say about Wonderland.

A close to what will forever remain one of–if not my favourite–series of all time. Tying in elements not only from the main series, but now with all the lore of the Tales from and the Annuals, this piece closes up storylines across the board in its usual darkly grim fashion. Yet more exquisite artwork, yet more intense writing. The only problem is that there isn’t more.

January Product Review Contest TFAWFinally, Michael from Copperas Cove, TX dropped by for a couple reviews, one of them for the Flashpoint HC. Here’s what he had to say:

Flashpoint is extremely important to the new DC universe as it is the start point where everything changes and the all new universe begins. I really enjoyed this tome. On the other hand the Flash title has become boring to me after only four issues. I don’t believe DC can maintain the pace of 52 comics. I believe that by the end of 2012 they will be doing excellent if they are stilling selling half that.

We want to thank everyone again for sharing their product reviews last month. Good stuff! If you’re submitting product reviews, please don’t submit duplicate reviews or submissions from other merchant websites.

It’s simple! Just visit any product page and look for this:
